Horizon Line Coffee

, 0

This month, my fiancé and I returned to our hometown to visit family and celebrate an early Christmas. Whenever we’re back in the area, we always make it a point to stop at one of our favorite local coffee shops—Horizon Line Coffee in downtown Des Moines, Iowa. It’s one of those places that feels like a must-visit every time we’re home.

Located in the heart of downtown, this charming café offers everything you could want from a specialty coffee shop: thoughtfully crafted drinks, a cozy atmosphere, and a strong focus on sustainability. One of the most unique aspects is that they serve drinks in reusable glassware that you can take home and bring back on future visits. It’s a simple but impactful touch that makes the experience feel even more intentional and eco-friendly.

A Sustainable Coffee Shop in Downtown Des Moines, IA

What sets Horizon Line Coffee apart from other cafés in Des Moines is its commitment to sustainability and quality. The use of reusable glass cups not only reduces waste but also gives the entire experience a more elevated, café-meets-community feel.

It’s the kind of coffee shop where you can stop in for a quick drink or settle in and enjoy the calm, relaxing atmosphere for a while. Whether you’re meeting a friend, working remotely, or just taking a break, it’s a space that invites you to slow down.

If you’re searching for a sustainable coffee shop in Des Moines, IA, this is definitely one worth adding to your list.

Seasonal Coffee and Tea Menu

One of my favorite things about Horizon Line is their rotating seasonal menu. They regularly introduce new and creative flavors that reflect the time of year, making each visit feel a little different and exciting.

This time, I wasn’t feeling my best, so I opted for tea instead of coffee. I ordered a black tea infused with notes of passion fruit and mango. It was light, aromatic, and incredibly soothing—especially on my throat. The flavor was subtle but refreshing, with just enough fruitiness to make it feel special without being overpowering.

Every tea I’ve tried here has been consistently delicious, and this one was no exception.

Creative Drinks with Unique Flavor Profiles

My fiancé decided to try something a little more adventurous and ordered their seasonal hot chocolate. This wasn’t your typical sweet cocoa—it featured curry powder, ginger, and other warming spices blended into the drink.

At first, it sounded unusual, but the flavor combination worked surprisingly well. The spices gave it a slightly earthy, warming depth, while the chocolate still came through as smooth and sweet on the front end. It was rich, cozy, and perfect for a cold day.

Horizon Line really excels at creating drinks that feel innovative while still being approachable.

Why Horizon Line Coffee Is Worth Visiting

Overall, Horizon Line Coffee in downtown Des Moines, IA is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates high-quality coffee, creative tea options, and a focus on sustainability.

Whether you’re a local or just visiting the area, it’s the kind of café that leaves a lasting impression. Between the thoughtful drink menu, eco-friendly glassware program, and relaxing atmosphere, it stands out as more than just a coffee shop—it’s an experience.

If you’re looking for a unique coffee shop in Des Moines, or a sustainable café with seasonal drinks, Horizon Line is absolutely worth a stop.

Eggs and Jam

Back in my hometown of Des Moines, Iowa, there’s one brunch spot that stands out as one of the most unique and memorable places I’ve ever been to. Located on the west side of Des Moines, this restaurant is perfectly positioned between downtown and the suburbs, making it an easy stop no matter where you’re coming from.

From the moment you arrive, you can tell this isn’t your typical brunch restaurant. The entire concept is built around an old-school R&B and rap theme, and it shows in every detail. The interior is bold, colorful, and full of personality, with graffiti-style artwork, music-inspired décor, and a lively atmosphere that immediately sets the tone for a fun dining experience.

If you’re looking for a unique brunch spot in Des Moines, IA with a creative theme and bold personality, this place absolutely delivers.

A Fun, Music-Inspired Brunch Atmosphere in Des Moines

The atmosphere is one of the biggest highlights of this restaurant. It’s energetic, vibrant, and full of visual detail. Every wall feels intentional, filled with graffiti-style art and nods to hip-hop and R&B culture.

It’s the kind of place that feels upbeat without being overwhelming—perfect for weekend brunch, group gatherings, or family meals. The creative design makes it feel more like an experience than just a restaurant.

Creative Menu with Hip-Hop Inspired Brunch Names

One of the most entertaining parts of the menu is the naming style. Every dish is creatively named after iconic music references, which adds a playful twist to the ordering experience.

Some standout examples include:

  • Toast Face Killah
  • You Can’t Touch This
  • And many other cleverly named brunch dishes

The menu also includes a wide variety of adult brunch beverages, making it a popular spot for weekend brunch outings. One of our family favorites is the raspberry mimosa, which is light, refreshing, and perfect for pairing with breakfast dishes. They even offer coffee cocktails and other brunch drinks for those who want a little extra kick in the morning.

If you’re searching for a fun brunch restaurant in Des Moines with creative menu items and cocktails, this spot is definitely worth checking out.

The P. Diddy – A Loaded Biscuit Breakfast Sandwich

For my meal, I ordered The P. Diddy, which is a biscuit sandwich layered with bacon, cheese, fried egg, and avocado, all smothered in sausage gravy.

I requested the sausage gravy on the side (as shown in my photo) both to highlight the ingredients

inside the sandwich and because I’m mildly lactose intolerant. Even without the gravy poured over, the sandwich was incredibly rich, flavorful, and satisfying.

The combination of ingredients works surprisingly well together:

  • The biscuit is soft and buttery
  • The bacon adds a smoky crunch
  • The egg brings richness
  • The avocado adds creaminess and balance

Even without the gravy fully incorporated, every bite is packed with flavor. It’s easily one of the more indulgent and satisfying brunch sandwiches I’ve had.

Family Favorites – Vegan & Classic Brunch Options

One of the best things about this restaurant is that it truly offers something for everyone. My family ordered a variety of dishes so we could share and try as much as possible.

Vegan Sausage, Potato & Veggie Hash

My sister ordered the vegan hash, which included plant-based sausage, potatoes, and vegetables. The flavor was surprisingly bold and well-seasoned, making it one of the better vegan breakfast options I’ve tried. The seasoning and texture made it feel just as satisfying as a traditional meat-based hash.

Vegan Pancakes

She also ordered the vegan pancakes, served with fresh fruit and almond butter. They were fluffy, flavorful, and paired beautifully with the toppings.

Classic Breakfast Plate

My mom went with a traditional breakfast of eggs, bacon, potatoes, and toast. What makes this simple dish stand out is the selection of house-made jams, which are served with the toast. Each one has a unique flavor, and every variety we’ve tried has been excellent.

Why This Is one of the Best Brunch Spot in Des Moines, IA

What makes this restaurant truly special is the combination of creative food, fun atmosphere, and consistent quality. It’s not just about the meals—it’s about the entire experience.

Between the bold R&B-inspired décor, the playful menu names, and the wide range of brunch options, this place has become one of my favorite brunch destinations in Iowa.

It works just as well for family brunch, casual weekend outings, or introducing visitors to something uniquely local.
